Medical Transcription: 4 Pros of Working From Home

Often people who go into medical transcription do it because they want to work from home. Even in the ads that tout “bad” programs, they talk about the ability to work from your home. Now, I won’t get started on the ones that say “work part time from home, save money on clothes, and you too can make $50,000 a year!” Nope, that’s not today’s intent.Working from home comes with a great deal of benefits. Today I want us to explore those. Don’t worry, we’ll get to the cons of working from home (yes, there ARE some) in another post!FlexibilityPerhaps the biggest benefit one gets in working from home is flexibility. While I realize that’s not true of every medical transcriptionist and some are actually working very stringent schedules, most MTs have flexibility when they work from home. It’s pretty easy to do a load of laundry while I’m working, for example. If you have children, you can stop and go to a school performance, come back and finish your day.Save Money on CommutingIt costs me nothing but energy to go to my office every day. As the price of gas increases, the cost of maintaining an automobile, etc., working from home definitely saves some money there. Along those lines, my car still has very low mileage, even though I’ve had it for six years now!Save Money on WardrobesIt is true that you can save money by not having to have a business suit to go to work every day. I have a friend who used to see PJ’s on sale and joke that the store was “having a sale on work clothes.” Still, there is a school of thought that you should get up every day just as if you were going to an office and get dressed and ready for work. For me personally, I don’t put make up on every day. Each person has to find what works for them in this one.ChildcareMany moms work from home and save money on childcare costs. The only child I have is a four-legged furry one, and he really wouldn’t go to daycare even if I worked in an office. I am amazed at those moms who can manage to focus on working at home AND taking care of children. I know many who do that. This also means when your kids come home from school, somebody is there to stop for a minute and hear how their day went.Okay, that’s my list of the pros of working from home doing medical transcription. I know you have more to add and will look forward to hearing those in the comment section. What have I missed?
